Tucked away at the tip of the northeast corner of the nation, Maine is most recognized for its rocky coastline and mountainous horizons. Many consider Maine to be one of the safest states in the US. Its main agricultural productions are eggs, dairy products, and blueberries. Being the 41st most populated state suggests more limited employment opportunities. Certification Requirements in Maine

Ultrasound technicians in Maine are not required or expected to gain their licensure, but it is often highly recommended for employment. Those interested in gaining certification can do so by passing a national exam administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Sonography (ARDMS). There is one program in Maine offered by Kennebec Valley Community College that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Technicians who landed in the top 10% of earners averaged an annual salary of $92,100 while those in the bottom 10% averaged $51,600. Sonographers who earned an hourly wage made on average $34.73 per hour in 2013.

The Maine Center for Workforce Research and Information suspects a 50% growth for employed ultrasound technicians between 2010 and 2020, which should bring total employment numbers to 390 by 2020. Due to growth and net replacement there is expected to be 20 annual job openings.
