The state of Idaho has a total area larger than the entirety of the New England region. The state earned the nickname “Gem State” after the discovery that it possessed nearly every known type of gemstone. As a result the state’s economy used to primarily rely on metal mining. It soon shifted toward agriculture, though, and then to science and technology. Boise is the most populated city in Idaho, and also the spot for most opportunity in the health care industry. As of 2012, there were 310 total diagnostic medical sonographers employed in the state. This number is expected to reach 370 by 2020.

Idaho offers an annual median salary just a bit beneath the national average. The job outlook for ultrasound technicians, however, is very positive. Employment is projected to grow at a rate of 57% between 2010 and 2020 – much faster than the national growth rate.

Certification Requirements in Idaho

Though not required, an exam is offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) for technicians to obtain certification. There is also one program offered by Boise State University that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Ultrasound Technician Salary in Idaho

2013 saw diagnostic medical sonographers in Idaho averaging an annual median salary of $62,100 which is just below the national median of $66,400. Idahoan sonographers in the top and bottom 10%, though, averaged a higher wage than national earners averaging $101,300 and $47,500 respectively. The hourly median average in Idaho for diagnostic medical sonographers was $29.85 as of 2013.

Analysts at Idaho Commerce & Labor set the projected growth at 57% between 2010 and 2020. Ultrasound technician employment in Idaho is projected grow at a faster rate than the national average . In 2020, Idaho is expected to see 370 total diagnostic medical sonographers employed with 20 annual job openings as a result of growth and net replacement.
